How did we choose the best security companies?
We’ve researched the market so you don’t have to. We actively search all over the internet, read a lot of user reviews, ask for expert opinions, test several products and talk to representatives of each company.
Once we have all the information we need, we compare the things we believe are most important to users, such as: level of security offered, technology, installation process, price, and more.
Finally, we summarize that information to make it as accessible as possible.
Guide to choosing the best alarms for home
Where do I start?
If you’re thinking about buying an alarm for your home or simply upgrading your home security system, you may feel overwhelmed by the number of monitoring systems and services available on the market. The security sector has evolved a lot over the past few years and today we have many options when it comes to protecting our home. Whether it’s hiring services, companies, or managing everything ourselves.
We have the most famous companies, such as ADT, FrontPoint, Vivint, ProtectAmerica, LinkInteractive and lesser-known local small businesses. There are also other options and equipment that include DIY alarms, audio-only alarms and maximum security options that can include video surveillance.
Faced with this flood of options, it is not always easy to understand all of them for those who enter this sector. That’s why we decided to create alarmadoo as an entry point for information and comparison of alarms.
In this guide we want to guide you in choosing the security system of your home with full knowledge.
All our partners are leading security companies in the United States
Why compare before choosing an alarm for your home?
Feeling and being protected is the most important aspect, but we must also evaluate other things such as cost, amenities, type of contract, extras… There is no a unique or best solution for all cases, so let’s go inside to find out what we should take into account when choosing the tools or companies that give us that peace of mind we are looking for.
Reasons to use an alarm comparison engine
Situation and why you should protect your home with an alarm system
Feeling safe and secure, is one of the greatest human needs. It affects all the other facets of our lives both negatively (stress) and positively (peace of mind, confidence).
Many people wonder if it is really worth spending money on installing a system that protects us and our possessions from external agents. Whether it’s a robbery or other events that are difficult to control, such as a fire or flood, having the assurance that it will be controlled gives us peace of mind and relief, which are worthwhile.
With the increasing number of home burglaries, it is not always possible for the authorities to urgently address all cases. Losses accumulate and robberies with violence multiply. What can we do about it?
According to the security agents themselves, our best option is to install an alarm kit in our home. While these systems are not foolproof, they are our best ally in these situations. In addition to serving as a deterrent, they give us a vital reaction time while at the same time allowing us to inform the authorities for a correct intervention.
Advantages of having a security system at home
One of the great effects of having an alarm in your flat or chalet is to make thieves think twice before they enter. They usually prefer the easier targets and, when it comes to committing a robbery, they usually choose an unprotected house over a house with some kind of surveillance system.
In the event of a possible intrusion, it is vital to know how our alarm system works and reacts. The sooner you act, the harder it will be for the thief to take something without being caught.
And it’s not just about avoiding theft. There are many other dangers from which we can protect ourselves with the right security system: floods, fires, emergencies…
In case of having a security company, they are in charge of executing the whole protocol when we face an intrusion event. This protocol is well studied and perfectly executed by the company professionals. They watch over us and have the necessary expertise to minimize the problems caused by an intrusion attempt.
Some security systems give us the ability to record every time someone enters or leaves the home. This access record helps us better control the possible staff of the house or our own children.
Types of alarms to install in our home
We will now describe the different systems we can buy or contract. From the humble opinion of alarmadoo, we order them by the type and level of security they provide.
Home security systems connected to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC)
The most reliable option for detection today is to hire one of the monitored alarm systems that communicate with a Central Alarm Receiver System (CRA).
In this modality, an external company such as ADT or FrontPoint will be in charge of answering 24/7 every day of the year to act on all incidents directly and, above all, notify the nearest police station so that they can be present in a few minutes.
There is a payment in the form of a monthly fee to this company that monitors our home at all times and activates its action protocol in the event of an alarm jump or other emergencies (if the company offers extra services).
These security companies use automated software to monitor and respond to all events. They also have a human team at the head office to deal with all incidents that occur, verify them and act as quickly as possible.
Thus, we are protected in any circumstance and we can rest assured in case of emergency, wether we are far from home or even if we are inside the house.
Home alarm systems and insurance companies
For large homes in remote locations, high-risk properties, or residential properties that are occupied on a part-time basis, you may find that a monitoring system is a requirement from your home insurance policy.
This is often an obligation when it comes to taking out insurance for commercial premises, which are the ones that most require this type of alarm system because they are exposed to greater risk of theft.
Alarm jumps and alerting the police from the ARC
As we have mentioned, when you hire a company to be in charge of the monitoring of our system, they are in charge of managing the events thar may happen. The security company will check the situation and appropriately notify the authorities in the shortest possible time.
Communication with the ARC
The systems used by these companies usually have several communication channels:
- Instead of having a single channel to communicate, these systems have one primary route and another backup path(s).
- This means that, if there is a fault or problem with the primary channel (such as WiFi), or a cut in the landline transmission or even if there is no coverage, one of the backup channels, such as the GSM mobile network or signals via radio, Internet, etc., will be automatically used.
It is important to highlight the difference between alarm receiving centres. If we choose to hire a company, it is important to know the capacity of its communication center. The law stipulates certain measures and requirements to operate according to the volume of clients and services offered.
All companies have to comply with these minimums in order to operate, but differences in the technology and capacity of each company can be abysmal.
Cheaper isn’t always better. When we talk about our most precious property and, even more so, our security, we want to be reassured the provider has the capacity to do so.
That’s why in alarmadoo we only compare between serious and professional security companies. Unfortunately, we believe that not all companies can deliver on their promises.
Companies usually offer other extra services (we will detail the most improtant ones below), such as fire and flood detection, medical emergency… As well as home automation services and other amenities. Services always backed by your ARC.
Response service with attendance
Some security companies offer an emergency alarma response service where their trained security officers will attend your premises on your behalf to deal with whatever cause the activation of the alarm.
The service is usually subject to geographical availability and real availability at the time of intrusion: guards may be busy dealing with other cases, it may take too long for them to get from the head office to the area of operation, etc.
It should be noted that this private guard is not authorized by law to enter the dwelling nor does he or she posses the training of a law enforcement officer. Therefore, until the police present themselves at the scene, nothing can and should be done (for their own safety) until the authorities arrive. Likewise, the response of our security forces is usually impeccable and the response time to a correct alarm activation is minimal.
More and more companies have home alarms integrated with smart household appliances such as boilers, lights, blinds… And they allow us to manage them from the system’s mobile app.
This service allows us to remotely control, whenever we want, the compatible devices and, for example, heat the house to a certain temperature before we arrive, turn on and off lights to scare off potential thieves, among many other possibilities.
This extra service has become almost a required one in many alarm kits.
This service is especially useful if the residents of the house are elderly, as it allows them to receive medical assistance at the touch of a button.
In order to increase the ease of use and to be always available, this button isusually offered as a pendant so that the client always carries it with him. Thus, even in the event of falling to the ground without being able to get up, the person will be able to communicate with the ARC and receive both support and dispatch of sanitary units if necessary.
- Most companies offer a “basic kit” with the 3 detectors required by law.
- This package is usually accompanied by a few extras depending on the company we choose: controls, keys, additional services, company badges…
- We can add as many detectors and services as we need or consider necessary. Although these basic packages cover a large percentage of the cases, our security system must always be adapted to the characteristics of our house.
- The contract is signed with the company and, within 24/48 hours, a technician from this company performs the installation. From then on, they take care of everything.
- The option that best protects us.
- Easy installation and management.
- You don’t have to do anything, the security company takes care of everything. Every time there is an event in your house, it communicates with a Alarm Receiver Centre 24 hours a day and they will always respond.
- You don’t have to be at home or intervene.
- Many companies update the equipment to keep it up to date with the latest technologies.
- The signal path is controlled, so any attempt to manipulate or alter the signal will be notified to the company.
- The security company can send more detailed information than a digital communicator. With information from the security company, the police are better informed and prepared to handle the situation when they arrive.
- They usually have extras to attend medical emergencies, fire, floods…
Security companies strictly comply with the Security Regulations of the country they operate in. This is a very important factor when we hand the protection of our property to someone external. It is also important to know all the regulations offered by the National Police website or the Official State Gazette website.
If you have particularly valuable items in your home, such as technology equipment, expensive jewelry, or simply other personal items that you want to preserve, we highly recommend this home alarm system type as it offers the highest protection level.
This, together with the continuous monitoring by professionals and the activation of the necessary security protocols, make hiring a specialized company the best anti-theft option when it comes to protecting ourselves.
In case of emergency we can always contact someone who assists us and inform us at all times of the situation, as well as follow up with our cameras through an app.
Although we recommend you to read our guide about alarms without quotas or DIY alarms to obtain the best information and compare between the different systems of this type available, we offer you here a brief presentation of the types of wifi & GSM alarms that exist:
Acoustic only systems
These systems, or elements if we want to be more precise, are very basic and their “protection” is merely acoustic.
These are also known as unsupervised systems and only emit a loud acoustic sound in the event of a home entrance while you are away. They don’t connect with a ARC, so the performance depends entirely on you.
They can be purchased at hardware stores, DIY stores or online shops.
Purely acoustic systems have the following characteristics:
- They are a visible deterrent to opportunistic thieves
- They make a sound to scare off an intruder
- It wakes you up if you’re home and someone tries to break in.
- They make neighbors aware of a robbery
- Everything else
Auto-dialers or GSM alarm systems
These systems are more advanced than the previous ones, although without reaching the level of security provided by a security company.
Communication of a stand-alone system
They are alarms with an automatic dialer: they include internal and external probes that will alert all programmed mobile phones in case of intrusion. They are usually scheduled to notify us, the owners, and trusted neighbors or people who can act in the event of a jump.
Therefore, auto-dialers are often used for housing in populated areas, as people who can act will have to be close by.
GSM alarms use mobile phone networks and text messages to communicate. You have to buy a SIM card to insert in the GSM marker, which is connected to the security system of your flat or chalet.
You can buy a prepaid SIM card, making sure that you always keep it with a balance, because without it it loses all its functionality, or sign up for a new mobile line.
This type of alarm can call or text the numbers you have programmed in it. It will transmit the configured text or voice messages. The recipient can stop the GSM alarm by calling the prepaid card number with a key, entering a code or replying to the text message with a programmed code.
Some GSM alarm systems allow, with an SMS, to reset the codes for the alarm kit remotely. This can be useful if you or your designated staff are not able to arrive in a few minutes and you are sure that there is no real threat to your home.
You can record a voice message on the device and the phone numbers of the people you want to call if the incoming alarm is triggered. In this case, the system dials the numbers in order of priority and reproduces your message explaining what must have happened and what you want the people who receive it to do.
The person answering the call will be able to stop the speech dialer, and/or contact any of the following numbers by pressing a key or entering a code on their phone for deactivation.
Some auto-dialers can be set to detect and send different messages depending on the incidence of intruders, personal attacks or even fire incidents.
Alarm activation in a stand-alone system
When the system is activated by an intruder, probes equipped inside the device and on the outside walls of the building will be activated. A strobe light will also blink on the external probe to frighten off the thief and warn people near the scene of the crime. At the same time, you usually receive an SMS message or notification to your mobile phone with the warning to react.
The most advanced systems have a mobile application to receive these notifications and even connect to your home system to view video over the Internet.
To stop the noise and flashing strobe light, someone has to enter the correct code or slide the magnetic key in. The external probe will normally continue to sound for a maximum of 20 minutes. This limit is to prevent noise pollution – we’ve all been crazy about the sound of a siren while we’re at home, whether it’s from a car or a neighbor. The probe’s internal and outdoor lights will continue to blink until the system is turned off completely.
- The noise it emits and the attention it attracts is greater than in an acoustic only home alarm.
- Relatively inexpensive equipment to buy.
- There is no service fee once you have purchased and installed the system.
- It connects to your existing home phone line (without the need for additional line rental) or through a common SIM card.
- Backup battery for the external acoustic receiver that continues to sound even if the network connection is interrupted
- This is the recommended minimum level of protection: if no one responds to noise or is available, it may not scare off intruders.
- If you want to increase your protection a little bit, you need a landline phone at home – not everyone has one today.
- An intruder may cut the phone line, or disable the mobile signal so the system would not be able to call.
- Cost of calls via SIM card.
- You have to be very alert about keeping your card balance topped up.
- If your mobile phone doesn’t have very good coverage in your area, communication won’t be reliable – you should use a network you trust 100%.
- Advanced thieves can remove external probes from the wall and place them in a bucket of water to reduce the sound of the alarm.
- We, or people in our immediate circle, have to verify and take action when, in general, we do not have any training for this. You have to find reliable people who live nearby as message recipients if you are not available.
If you want the police to be notified as soon as the alarm is activated, the minimum option is a “Digicom” type system monitored and maintained by a recognized company.
These systems try to combine the advantages in cost of the autonomous systems with the security that gives us a company with monitoring of the alarm in our home.
Remember that you will have to pay an annual monitoring subscription and a maintenance fee for this type of home alarm just like when you hire a company to manage everything.
For added security, this communication system notifies if the signaling path is tampered with or altered in any way. Again, there is an annual subscription and maintenance fee. For a highly secure signalling system that meets stringent safety requirements, the dual way signalling communication is your best option.
- Improves a little bit the security of DIY without-fees alarms
- External monitoring
- Cost not much lower than a company can offer us
- Less professional teams
What to Consider When Choosing a Home Alarm
Choosing a company to trust our most valuable belongins is not easy. On the surface, everything may seem the same but, if we go a little deeper, we will begin to see the differences between some companies and others.
We are going to go over the main points that we must analyze when assessing which option is best for us.
As far as cost is concerned, many factors come into play, and not always the seemingly cheaper option will be the best in the medium term.
To this we add that, when it comes to security, there is no point in paying if we are not really protected. Equally, not all available services are always needed to have a good system at a fair price.
Among the main factors that influence the price, we have:
- Monitoring: in case we pay a fee to a company that is aware of the alarm jumps and other warnings
- Equipment cost: in case of contracting oa security company, we have the options to owning or renting the equipment.
In case of purchasing equipment for a quota-free system, the cost is usually reduced to this devices and at most some small extra cost.
The amount charged by the company will depend to a large extent on the type of installation carried out. If your system connects to the ARC via mobile (more expensive), with your internet connection (cheaper), or by traditional telephone line (the cheapest).
Some companies today offer all 3 types of connection simultaneously as a backup plan in case of failure.
Paying a fee allows the company to have staff always ready to assist you in an emergency.
Customer Service Support
If you hire a security company, customer service will be one of the things you should value most. The bad news is that it is not always easy to know how this service works within a company. Unfortunately, there are many false, malicious opinions and reviews circulating on the Internet. Make sure that what you’re reading doesn’t come from a competitor of that company with conflicting interests to inform you.
The level of customer service of alarm companies is very variable. Cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean better, but at the same time you shouldn’t have to pay more if that increase isn’t reflected in the quality of service. Although it is impossible to find a company that everyone talks about well, because there is always some negative experience, it is easy to see how some companies receive much more real negative criticism.
We advise you to have customer service as a high priority point when deciding which company to hire. Sooner or later you’ll need it and, at that point, you’ll see the importance of choosing a good company.
You will most likely need a professional alarm installer to install, configure and maintain your security system, so count on it. If you hire a company, be it ADT, Vivint, ProtectAmerica, SimpliSafe or any local company, this service is included. But if you decide to opt for an alarm with no fees, you will have to learn and carry out the work yourself or hire an expert to install and configure it correctly.
The majority of today’s equipment is wireless and communicates by different signals such as WiFi or GSM, so we can save a wired installation, but in turn requires a little more knowledge in terms of device configuration.
The detectors and cameras, or the different sensors (opening, infrared), are placed in strategic areas of the house as corners with a wide range of vision or doors and windows.
If you prefer a professional installation, the alarm companies with quota usually perform it for free or at a very attractive price. In some cases, in mixed systems (alarms with a monthly fee, but with your own installation) you can pay extra if you prefer to have it installed.
The team at alarmadoo recommend the professional installation of the equipment. This little extra, if there is one, is usually worthwhile because most of the time we don’t have the necessary knowledge and tools. But if you are very handy and are convinced of doing it, you can save yourself some money by doing it yourself with the systems that allow it.
- Easy installation: They are contracted through the company and are usually carried out by a company technician. The user does not have to perform any type of management. Being wireless equipment, installation is simpler and faster and requires no more than a few holes to install certain devices.
- Connection to the ARC by GSM signal: The devices have a SIM card like the one we have in our mobile phones, from which the warning signals are sent. For this reason, in very rare exceptions, coverage may not be available. In this case, the company may not install a wireless system.
- Battery life: Each device has a battery. In some cases they are just ordinary batteries, in other cases a special battery. Depending on the contract we sign with the company, it will offer us free replacements or not.
Wired alarms, by their nature, are more difficult to install and take about twice as long to install as a wireless alarm.
It is also necessary to have some work done in the house (frames, more holes, etc.) for its installation, so the aesthetic and cost factors are also aspects to be taken into account.
The equipment used for this type of installation sends the signals to the ARC through the telephone line based on different protocols (SIA2000, ContactID).
In the last few years, a mixed connection has been established where the equipment also has an Ethernet port to allow communication through the Internet, which extends functionality and security.
Home automation is another field that is undergoing revolutionary changes in recent years. Technological companies are increasingly offering more and more options to facilitate the smallest tasks and give us the greatest possible comfort.
Depending on who we contract our alarm service with, it may also offer integrated home automation solutions such as remote control of the thermostat, turn on/off lights or set a schedule for them, such as controlling other small appliances.
If we are technology enthusiasts, this will be something to keep in mind and a differentiating factor when choosing.
On the go access
Some security companies do not offer any access to your system once you are away from home. Among those that allow you to manage your alarm from your mobile phone, there are different degrees of access.
Many allow you to remotely arm/disarm your system or receive certain types of alerts. Others, with more modern and complex solutions, allow you to interact with the whole of your system, request video, etc.
In the world in which we live today, this may be paramount in many cases. Some people will use these features on an ongoing basis, while others will not use them at all. As we said above: specific solutions for each case.
It is usually activated/deactivated by entering a code. Some systems provide magnetic keys to carry on a keychain. Simply brush them against the control panel instead of typing in the code to disable your property’s security system.
If the system is activated, in the event of an intrusion or other events (such as attempted sabotage), sensors that detect the anomaly will send a signal. In case of having a self-installing alarm, the unit will try to alert the GSM numbers configured. If we have a central receiver for having contracted a security company, they will take care of everything and we can also be aware of everything that happens through an app on our smartphone (if the company has this service).
Next, we will go on to describe the different options that the security market gives us and what options we consider best from alarmadoo.
Cameras & CCTV
There are some companies, or kits, that do not offer cameras. Others, on the other hand, offer cameras of different types: fixed indoor cameras, cameras that you can take with you wherever you want, cameras for outdoor use…
In environments where greater security is required, a video surveillance system can also be installed.
Fixed cameras focus on a single position, while pan cameras can rotate and see the panoramic view of a particular area.
Some security companies allow you to view live video, or recordings, of your property remotely from your Smartphone or the web. In some cases, this service is a little extra.
Outdoor cameras are designed to be installed outside home. They are built to withstand the weather conditions of rain, cold, heat, snow… And their purpose is to prevent theft before thieves set foot in your home.
It should be borne in mind that the law is very strict as to where and how these cameras can be installed. Under no circumstances will they be able to record images very outside where mere passers-by are seen walking. It’s a security measure, not espionage.
So, what are the best alarms for my home?
If you simply need a visible deterrent and make some noise to scare away would-be intruders, then an unsupervised alarm with a mobile warning system is fine for you. This is the least we recommend as a cheaper and cheaper option, but with a high risk.
At no time do we recommend relying on a purely acoustic system.
Mixed systems can provide more anti-theft security than more economical systems, but at the price that security companies are offering us today, we believe this option is not worth the effort.
For a modest price, many times much lower than we think, we can count on the real and supervised protection and all the extra services that an alarm company gives us.
Whatever system you choose, make sure it meets the requirements of your home insurance company, if applicable. You can often benefit from a discount on your insurance premium by installing a home security system.
In short, the best alarm for us is the one that suits our needs and the specifications of our home. To determine these cases, it is best to provide information to the alarm companies so that they can design a plan and perform a fully customized installation.
Security is not an easy service. When dealing with something as delicate as our well-being and protection, we must take every precaution possible. The certified professionals of the sector with whom we work, will offer you all their knowledge and experience so that you can compare and choose the best alarm for you.
Take advantage of the comparisons that alarmadoo has made for you and get the best prices for your alarm.
