Communication of a stand-alone system

They are alarms with an automatic dialer: they include internal and external probes that will alert all programmed mobile phones in case of intrusion. They are usually scheduled to notify us, the owners, and trusted neighbors or people who can act in the event of a jump.

Therefore, auto-dialers are often used for housing in populated areas, as people who can act will have to be close by.

GSM alarms use mobile phone networks and text messages to communicate. You have to buy a SIM card to insert in the GSM marker, which is connected to the security system of your flat or chalet.

You can buy a prepaid SIM card, making sure that you always keep it with a balance, because without it it loses all its functionality, or sign up for a new mobile line.

This type of alarm can call or text the numbers you have programmed in it. It will transmit the configured text or voice messages. The recipient can stop the GSM alarm by calling the prepaid card number with a key, entering a code or replying to the text message with a programmed code.

Some GSM alarm systems allow, with an SMS, to reset the codes for the alarm kit remotely. This can be useful if you or your designated staff are not able to arrive in a few minutes and you are sure that there is no real threat to your home.

You can record a voice message on the device and the phone numbers of the people you want to call if the incoming alarm is triggered. In this case, the system dials the numbers in order of priority and reproduces your message explaining what must have happened and what you want the people who receive it to do.

The person answering the call will be able to stop the speech dialer, and/or contact any of the following numbers by pressing a key or entering a code on their phone for deactivation.

Some auto-dialers can be set to detect and send different messages depending on the incidence of intruders, personal attacks or even fire incidents.

Alarm activation in a stand-alone system

When the system is activated by an intruder, probes equipped inside the device and on the outside walls of the building will be activated. A strobe light will also blink on the external probe to frighten off the thief and warn people near the scene of the crime. At the same time, you usually receive an SMS message or notification to your mobile phone with the warning to react.

The most advanced systems have a mobile application to receive these notifications and even connect to your home system to view video over the Internet.

To stop the noise and flashing strobe light, someone has to enter the correct code or slide the magnetic key in. The external probe will normally continue to sound for a maximum of 20 minutes. This limit is to prevent noise pollution – we’ve all been crazy about the sound of a siren while we’re at home, whether it’s from a car or a neighbor. The probe’s internal and outdoor lights will continue to blink until the system is turned off completely.

  • We, or people in our immediate circle, have to verify and take action when, in general, we do not have any training for this. You have to find reliable people who live nearby as message recipients if you are not available.

Mixed systems

If you want the police to be notified as soon as the alarm is activated, the minimum option is a “Digicom” type system monitored and maintained by a recognized company.

These systems try to combine the advantages in cost of the autonomous systems with the security that gives us a company with monitoring of the alarm in our home.

Remember that you will have to pay an annual monitoring subscription and a maintenance fee for this type of home alarm just like when you hire a company to manage everything.

On the go access

Some security companies do not offer any access to your system once you are away from home. Among those that allow you to manage your alarm from your mobile phone, there are different degrees of access.

Many allow you to remotely arm/disarm your system or receive certain types of alerts. Others, with more modern and complex solutions, allow you to interact with the whole of your system, request video, etc.

In the world in which we live today, this may be paramount in many cases. Some people will use these features on an ongoing basis, while others will not use them at all. As we said above: specific solutions for each case.

It is usually activated/deactivated by entering a code. Some systems provide magnetic keys to carry on a keychain. Simply brush them against the control panel instead of typing in the code to disable your property’s security system.
