The company

When Matt Rogers and Tony Fadell founded NEST, they wanted to create a company that would make home a better place, a home that would take care of people with useful automated and attractive devices. Both former employees of Apple Inc., Fadell was the mind behind the iPod and someone that saw in Steve Jobs a mentor. The Nest Thermostat was
their first creation, it was a true success that was followed by Nest Protect (smoke and monoxide carbon detector). Nest then acquired Dropcam, a company that was developing security cameras, and created Nest Cam.

The company was attracting the interest of many different big boys of the tech industry and eventually, in January 2014 it was acquired by Google. Tony Fadell, the CEO of nest since the beginning brought into the company the “Apple tenacious culture”, something that down the road was going to clash with the “Google relaxed culture” and that made many employees to shift toward other projects around Silicon Valley (including many of the personnel from Dropcam). Nest Cam Outdoor and Nest Cam IQ followed the flow of innovation within the company and finally, in September 2017, Nest Secure was born. In the process of creating their own home automation security brand, Nest partnered with many home security companies that entered the program Work with Nest, a program that allowed third party devices to communicate with products developed by Nest.

Nest is nowadays a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google, where Tony Fadell serves, from June 2016, as an advisor next to Larry Page (founder of Google). At that time Marwan Fawaz was designated as CEO of Nest in what seemed to the industry a way to bring a low key manager that could take the Palo Alto headquartered company to fulfill the expectations Google had for Nest back in 2014 when acquired it, expectations that, despite the constant growth of Nest, weren’t fully achieved.

Since Marwan Fawaz took on, as we mentioned before, Nest Secure (and later Nest Hello) made its appearance giving home security the automation it deserves.

The tech

State of the art technology is what the Nest team came up with. A main hub called Nest Guard is the core of this home security system. Nest Guard is the ultimate control panel as it is equipped also with a tamper and motion sensor (90 degrees field of view up to 10 feet); along with Nest Guard (if you buy just the Starter Pack) you will get two Nest Detect sensors and two Nest Tag.

Of course we strongly recommend to add the Nest Aware service (we’ll talk about it later) and cameras to your system as we are talking top of the edge tech for the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor (can detect a person up to 50 feet) and the rest of the Nest cameras. Nest Hello is also the ultimate doorbell able to record up to 30 straight days of continued video.

Of course the Nest Learning Thermostat, the thermostat that revolutionized the energy saving market and that from 2011 to this day has helped save over 12 billion of kWh of energy, of 3rd Generation is what you want to have in order to really make a difference not only in your place but for the world. In addition to all of this equipment you would like to add also the Nest Protect, the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detector.

All the products have a design that is truly attractive as you can expect from a firm founded by people that came with the Apple mentality and that has been also developed by people that came with the Google culture. The equipment presented by Nest to the customers are the perfect mix of tech and visual.

The Tech outside the Equipment

What else does Frontpoint offer?

This is more than just home security and home automation, Nest offers “home-automation-security” as it is just one big word that includes everything you might need to feel safer and more comfortable in your house. When it comes to home security and home protection, it is worth mentioning Nest Aware, the cloud service that records 24/7 video feed and that recognize faces. This last feature is very interesting because if you get an alert that a family member is near approaching your home thanks to the face recognition algorithm.

We will talk later about the cost of the subscription to Nest Aware, but imagine this, somes gets at the door, the Nest Cam lets you know but you are not in, you talk to the person through the camera and then interact with your Nest x Yale smart lock in order to unlock the house. When this person enters the house you will turn the lights on thanks to a Works with Nest device, the Nest Thermostat will adapt the temperature so the guest can wait for you comfortably while you arrive. This is the perfect combination of Home Security meets Home Automation. Many are also the devices that are Works with Nest compatible, from lights to home theaters and many more.

It is also worth mentioning that thanks to the partnership between Nest with MONI, you can get professional monitoring 24/7. MONI is a monitoring company that has been on the market for over 25 years and that is the perfect match for NEST as it is a very innovative company since they use specific technology in order to quickly be communicated with you when the alarm is sent off and to keep the communication until the alarm situation is resolved. MONI handles over 2 million alarms a year and has high Customer Support standards. The Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) has awarded MONI Alarm Response Center with the prestigious Five Diamond Certification. Less than 3 percent of recognized North American monitoring centers are Five Diamond Certified. This talks a lot about how Nest partners only with excellency in all the areas.

Our review

There’s truly nothing more to add. Nest Secure is the ultimate Home Security system that is perfectly integrated with Home Automation. Also, as we saw before, they rely on a top monitoring company like MONI. Customer Support is not the greatest as many users have complained about rude responses from Nest personnel and long wait calls, this is something they need to fix if they want to achieve excellence. The only other thing that keeps Nest Secure behind other companies is the cost of the equipment. But if you can afford it, don’t even blink. Nest Secure is what you are looking for in order to protect your family and your home.
