The company

The idea of providing internet connected security systems was at the core of the founding of InGrid Home (later renamed LifeShield) back in late 2003. Louis A. Stilp, bachelor studies at Drexel University and MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, wanted its creation to provide remote access for his customers as well as a faster response time to monitoring centers. LifeShield was one of the first companies, if not the first, to start developing the broadband connection for home security systems when the traditional companies were offering mostly landline services, they were able to develop what could be called a four connection method for their main control panel: the possibility to communicate through internet, cellular, text or landline.

Eventually the company started to develop other features like the “Siren Detector”, a device that “listen” to the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors you might have and that call the proper authorities when the devices start to sound. At the time, this was revolutionary as most of the companies didn’t have their fire and carbon monoxide alarms connected directly with their main hub and thus to the monitoring centers. Eventually this system was overshadowed by the technological development of the home security and home automation industry, but LifeShield was always able to keep their equipment solid and competitive. They also have crash and smash protection on their security system, something that not every company has and that will give proper protection against potential burglars. As the founder and CEO of the company has remarked over and over, innovation is key and that’s why they are working in order to develop home automation as it is key for the company’s survival in the home security market.

LifeShield was later purchased by Directv in 2013 and then sold in 2017 to an investor group that also included one Mike Hagan, hat prior to the sell of the company was running the company alongside Louis Stilp. A company like LifeShield that has been one of the first in understanding the importance of interactive security must continue to work hard in order to get to the level of the competitors.

The tech

LifeShield has developed over the years a solid and interconnected equipment that will provide customers with the level of security they need despite not offering fancy devices or home automation.

All packages include at least a base, a keypad, a wireless security tablet, a fire safety sensor, a door/window sensor and a motion sensor. As we mentioned before, the base offers 4 different ways of communication, the main one is broadband, LifeShield was born with the idea of offering home security through broadband communication in order to offer quicker response time, nevertheless, the company understood the importance of not relying just on one layer of protection and added into the main hub also cellular (the most secure form of communication in the home security market), text and, for those that still have one at home, landline. The keypad is what will let you control the system and is linked with the monitoring center, it has Crash and Smash protection so if someone breaks in and destroy your keypad, the device will send a signal to the monitoring center and proper measures will be taken.

The fire safety sensor is the evolution of the device we talked before and that is one of the top LifeShield developments over the years. This device works with all the fire and carbon monoxide sensors you might have already installed, when the device “listen” to the siren of those fire and CO sensors, it will trigger an alarm that will inform the monitoring center about a possible harmful situation so they  can call the authorities if needed.

Indoor cameras are also available and it’s cool the fact that you can get video monitoring also with the middle-tier packages the company has to offer.

All the equipment has a sleek design that can be placed almost anywhere in your house without catching the eye big time.

Let’s take a look with more detail into some of the equipment LifeShield has to offer to their clients.

Equipment

LifeShield Security Base (S30)

The S30 is the core of the home security system that LifeShield offers. 4 layers of monitoring that will allow for   total communication with the monitoring center. In case power goes out, it has a built-in 24- hour battery that will keep your system connected.

The Tech outside the Equipment

What else does Frontpoint offer?

Interconnectivity is what LifeShield wants to provide and that’s why all their devices offer the possibility of online monitoring through website or app. You can arm and disarm your system thanks to the app developed with the company as well as you can control the cameras and go through the stored videos and pictures. The Langhorne (PA) based company relies on Protection 1 for their monitoring services. An A+ BBB rating, 5 monitoring centers and over 2 million served yearly, Protection 1 is one of the finest alarm monitoring companies in the country. Also other big firms of the home security market like ADT relies on them; Tim Whall is the CEO for both ADT and Protection 1.

The Packs

LifeShield has a variety of packages and we really like this. You will be able to find what suits you best, you can get monitoring with no contract and monitoring with contract:

  • Security Essentials
  • Security Advantage
  • Security Professional

Prices, Contracts and Equipment Packages

When you decide to get a no contract package with LifeShield, you will have to pay the equipment upfront. You have two main options in this case, Security Essentials and Security Advantage. If you decide to sign a 36-month contract, above of the mentioned packages you can also find the Security Professional package that, according to their customer service is not advertised as it cheaper to add cameras to the Security Advantage package instead of purchasing the Security Professional one, in all the cases when you sign a contract the equipment will be provided for free. A $20 fee for equipment shipping will be charged along with an activation fee of $99.

When it comes to the equipment, all depends on how much you are willing to put upfront (when you go for a no contract monitoring) or on the monthly fee you are going to pay. The first camera option comes at $24.99 with no contract and at the moment it will be required to you to pay $299 for the equipment. The price in this case is very competitive since most of the competitors will ask for a highly monthly fee when it comes down to video monitoring. The only thing that you should be aware of is that while every package offers fire and CO protection, if you don’t have fire and CO detectors, you will need to purchase them apart from the package since the only included device is the fire sensor, the piece of equipment that “listen” to the already installed detectors and that we’ve talked about above.

Our review

If you are looking for an affordable and solid home security system that include cameras, LifeShield middle tear packages might be the right solution for you. However you have to know that their customer service is not very well rated and that we  Experienced on our own how difficult is to communicate with them and to receive clear information. They have a lot to do when it comes to transparency.

If you are looking for fancy equipment and home automation LifeShield is not the option you are looking for, they still haven’t developed home automation equipment at all. However, if
you just want home security that you can control through your smart device anywhere in the world and with no added fees, you should consider this option.
