In the summer of 2006 Chris Villar, Aaron Shumaker and Peter Rogers started to give shape to their idea of a company in the alarm security marketplace that would give customers what the sector was lacking

They knew that they wanted to deliver an over the top service with top products and a customer service that would actually take care of their customer, something that at the moment wasn’t there in the world of alarm companies.

It was 2007 when the company was founded and their rapid growth, achieved by improving the offer year after year as well as improving the relationship with their customer base, lead them to the top spots in the ranking of companies in the home security sector.

There is no doubt for the sector expert that Frontpoint is the top company when it comes to alarm companies. With a 30 day risk free trial, they are showing that they truly believe in what they do. The tech they use is state of the art and compatible with smart home devices, something that is growing within the public preferences and requested more and more nowadays.

Villar, Shumaker and Rogers have accomplished what they dreamed of and they show no sign of taking the foot off the gas, we expect them to be at the top for the next couple of years at least.

The good and the bad

Positives

  • Their Customer Service is one of the best if not the best in the marketplace
  • Installation is easy and DIY
  • Z-Wave compatible
  • Top technology in their products
  • 30 days free trial
  • The founders are still making the important decisions giving this national company a touch of family business

Negatives

  • The DIY installation might not be ideal if you seek a professional kind of installation
  • Their fees are higher compared to competitors
  • Where others offer a lifetime warranty on the equipment, Frontpoint offers “just” three years
  • Contract length is 36 months

The tech

As we talked before, one of the keys for the three founders of Frontpoint was to provide customers with top edge technology, something that they are able to accomplish year after year. Even in the cheapest plan you will find smoke and CO monitoring, something other companies will only give you as a paid extra. It’s also worth noting that most of their devices are Z-Wave compatible, something essential if you have a smart home already or you are thinking of making yours one in the next couple of years (remember you will be on a contract for at least 3 years so thinking ahead might be smart in cases like this).

A 7-inch touch-screen control panel will allow you to arm and disarm the alarm. It’s easy to use, wireless and with automatic updates. The mobile app by Frontpoint is used for arming and disarming remotely, live monitoring and alert messages (among many other features), and it is top rated on both the Google Play store and Apple Store. The intrusion sensors are very versatile and can be used also in cabinets and drawers in order to keep children safer and away from potential danger.

Frontpoint offers different types of cameras, from the V522IR indoor wireless IR to the outdoor wireless ODCAM. All of them are compatible with alarm.com and while they cannot trigger the alarm, you can set up notifications for video clips. Also available for the Ultimate Plan users, the Skybell, Frontpoint’s video doorbell (it requires WiFi), is a doorbell that not only will let you know who’s at the door, but that even lets you know if it detects motion.

Let’s take a look at the detailed information and cost for some of the most requested equipment that comes in Frontpoint’s plans.

Equipment

Qolsys Control Panel

Qolsys Control Panel

While Frontpoint offers a standard panel for four of their five equipment packages, this one called Qolsys is included in the Safe Home Touch equipment package. While this pack costs a little more than the others we think it is totally worth it as it is made for the long run with this amazing feature that allows the panel to get automatic updates.

Cost if bought outside the equipment pack: $357.99

Simon XT Control Panel

This is the standard Control Panel that is included in four of the five equipment packages. It is an old school panel that includes everything you need: an internal siren, wireless connectivity with all sensors, a 24-hour backup battery as well as being Z-Wave compatible.

Cost if bought outside the equipment pack: $59.99

Talking remote touchpad from Frontpoint

Talking Remote Touchpad

This touchpad basically duplicates the capabilities of the basic Control Panel. The “talking” part of the name is real, this remote touchpad talks to you when confirming your command and alarm status when you arm, disarm, and check your system status from alternate locations within the house.

Cost if bought outside the equipment pack: $69.99

Door / Window sensor

The versatility of this sensors is what caught our attention. These little guys can be placed not only on standard doors or windows, but can be used to secure the door cabinet of the place where you keep your gun. This way, if a child of yours opens something he is not supposed to open you will be immediately alerted.

Cost if bought outside the equipment pack: $14.99

Door and window sensor from Frontpoint
Motion sensor from Frontpoint

Motion Sensor

This 80-degree horizontal coverage motion infrared sensor, with 25-foot radius range will detect motion when you are not in the house. If you have a pet, you don’t have to worry as it is pet friendly (up to 40 pounds) and will not trigger a false alarm if your dog walks in front of it. This device has a battery life that will last 3 years.

Cost if bought outside the equipment pack: $29.99

Glass Break Sensor

The key difference between this sensor and the common window/door and motion sensors is that the Glass Break one will be active in both “Stay” and “Away” modes. This sensor has a 20 feet range and works by “listening” a specific acoustic frequency that is generated when a glass breaks. This means it will be triggered even in the unfortunate case you accidentally drop a glass. Nevertheless, this sensor will give you peace of mind when you go to bed and we strongly recommend it.

Cost if bought outside the equipment pack: $49.99

Recessed door sensor from Frontpoint

Recessed Door Sensor

This sensor is a magnetic reed switch, and consists of a small part that is recessed into the edge of the door and another piece, the main part of the sensor, that is recessed into the door frame. The two parts will then be next to each other when the door is closed. In this position you will be able to activate the alarm and once armed, if someone opens the door the alarm system will be triggered. If no one disarms the alarm properly, a signal will be sent to the central monitoring station.

Cost if bought outside the equipment pack: $22.99

Garage Door Sensor

This sensor will allow you to know when the garage door is open or closed. This will make you feel safer and prepared if someone that shouldn’t be there opens the garage door.

The Tech outside the Equipment

What else does Frontpoint offer?

Control center

As we have seen, state of the art tech is core for this company, and it comes as no surprise the fact that for their central monitoring they use Rapid Response, a company that uses highly trained personnel and the most advanced technologies available in the market with the purpose of providing the very best monitoring services. This company have a 40 000 square feet headquarters that is one of eleven central stations approved to monitor fire alarms in New York City; on top this Rapid Response perform monitoring also on military facilities so we can say that Frontpoint rely on possibly the best monitoring company of the country.

Home automation

Home Automation is one of the key things why we praise Frontpoint. Nowadays and with contracts that are usually long, is important, from where we stand, that companies might be able to offer something that will be useful from the first day to the last one of the contract. We are seeing an increase in the demand of smart devices for houses and Frontpoint is able to give you what you need in the field of smart home security with things like Geo Services (that will automatically remind you, by an alert that will pop up on your phone, to arm or disarm the alarm when you crossed a “geo fence”) and thermostat automation.

Communication

The communication between the monitoring center and the central panel in your home is by cellular line, something the company uses as its standard communication form as it is not possible to cut it as it might happen for landline communication systems. In the extremely rare case a cellular service goes down, Frontpoint uses a backup broadband.

Crush and Smash

Last but not least, is the Crush and Smash technology prevents an intruder from destroying or damaging your alarm system control panel before a distress signal can be sent to the Rapid Response station. Everytime the system is disabled improperly without the use of your secret code, the system will assume something is wrong and will alert the Rapid Response station. This technology has been patented by Frontpoint, another proof that state of the art technology and constant improvement of the equipment is core to this company.

The Packs

The best thing to do when it comes to finding the best pack for your home security is to talk to a salesperson in order to understand what’s included in the offer and what might suit your needs best. However, Frontpoint likes to offer three different standard packages: Protection Plan, Interactive Plan, Ultimate Plan

Prices, Contracts and Equipment Packages

While the three packages have a contract length of 36 months, the first one has a monthly fee of 34.99 while the other two stand at 44.99. While the monthly fee is the same and the upfront money starts at $99.99 up to $499.95, the total amount of upfront money will differ as it takes count of the devices you will need to install in one case or another.

Our review

It’s clear why Frontpoint is currently rated the top company in the security alarm marketplace, top of the edge technology, constant innovation, a great Customer Support that is always available to listen and recommend what is best for your needs without pressuring you to buy something you won’t need and the fact that the founders are still behind curtains directing the whole thing as it was the first day of the company, are key when it comes to offer a great service in this sector. We see no reasons on why, while continuing on this path, Frontpoint can’t be top company in the US for the years to come.
